Uncertainty

There is something about the creative process that leads artists of all stripes to doubt themselves. I think that's especially true of writers. Most writers believe they are frauds some of the time.

I believe this is partly because writing is so personal. It's impossible to distance yourself from your work to the point where you can fairly judge its quality.

Which leads to the burning question. If you are an unpublished author, how can you tell if your feelings are a normal part of the process for any developing writer, or a legitimate and fair assessment of your own work?
